Women’s World Banking commenced was initially incorporated as an NGO in May 1982 as a provider of microfinance and non-microfinance services mostly with the aim of training women on how to manage their business and maintain basic book keeping records. The NGO also guaranteed women entrepreneurs to take loans from local banks to support their business. In addition, they also introduced a “susu” operation (i.e. thrift deposit) through which contributors obtained financial assistance for their businesses.
On September 17, 1996, the NGO status was changed into a private limited liability company and licensed under the Non-bank financial institutions law Act 328 to provide credit and deposit taking services. It was later on converted into a Public Limited Liability Company in October 3, 2003
